The Royal Swedish Opera chooses Cirkus Venues’ Gasometer as temporary main stage
With Gasometer, Cirkus Venues is establishing a new arena for culture and entertainment in Norra Djurgårdsstaden, Stockholm. At the same time, the Royal Opera will have a new main stage, as Cirkus Venues is renting out parts of the Gasometer during the renovation of the Opera House.
This collaboration between Cirkus Venues and the Royal Swedish Opera will give visitors the opportunity to enjoy opera and ballet at Stockholm's newest cultural venue during the renovation of the opera house from 2027 to 2030. The agreement means that the Royal Swedish Opera will rent the theatre section of Gasometer, along with its modern technology, for most of the year.
The renovated former gas storage facility will enclose two large cultural venues, with the Royal Opera set to rent and utilise the Theater. Cirkus Venues will manage the event space the Dome, which accommodates around 1 000 guests for events and performances, and will also handle all food and beverage experiences. During the periods when the Opera is on break, other productions and events will take place in the theatre section.
- We want to establish a world-class arena for culture and entertainment, and we are delighted that the Royal Opera has chosen the Gasometer. The combination of the Royal Opera and our venue, with its spectacular architecture and cutting-edge arena technology, sets the ideal scene for grand experiences for our visitors. Additionally, the collaboration helps to establish Norra Djurgårdsstaden as a destination for cultural experiences, says Satu Andersson, CEO of Cirkus Venues.
The Theater in the Gasometer is being adapted by Cirkus Venues to meet the Royal Opera’s unique needs regarding the orchestra pit, sound and lighting, as well as the stage floor.
- We are taking the step from our beautiful but worn opera house to a completely newly built performance space, where even more people will have the chance to experience the national stage’s offerings of world-class opera, ballet, and classical music. This provides great opportunities to develop our operations and explore new expressions and formats on such an exciting stage, in a part of Stockholm that is currently being shaped by the construction of both housing and other facilities. By the time the Opera returns to the Opera House, we will have broadened our audience and attracted even more people, says Fredrik Lindgren, CEO of the Royal Opera.
