Qarlbo Biodiversity's Methodology Enables First Commercial Deal with Swedish Biodiversity Credits
For the first time, biodiversity credits have been sold commercially in Sweden. The seller is Orsa Besparingsskog, and the buyer is Devi Group. The deal was made possible by the biodiversity credit methodology developed by Qarlbo Biodiversity.
"It’s fantastic that we now have a solid ‘proof of concept’ after several years of development. Swedish forest owners can now sell biodiversity credits, and companies of all kinds can purchase them. This demonstrates that forest conservation and restoration can be transformed into a viable financial instrument. I believe biodiversity credits will now attract many more responsible companies," says Aleksandra Holmlund, CEO of Qarlbo Biodiversity.
Biodiversity credits allow companies to invest in positive biodiversity actions by purchasing them from forest owners, helping to preserve, enhance, and restore biodiversity in specific forest areas. This innovative approach not only promotes biodiversity but also provides forest owners with a financial return. Over the past several years, Qarlbo Biodiversity has developed a comprehensive methodology for biodiversity credit transactions, including financial modeling, traceability, and scientific monitoring. The current agreement covers 11 hectares of forest land over a five-year period, as part of a broader 20-year project.
Qarlbo Biodiversity is a wholly owned subsidiary of Qarlbo AB. The company's goal is to conserve and restore biodiversity by implementing the latest science to future-proof sustainable forestry. Qarlbo Biodiversity focuses on nature-positive forestry investments, biodiversity monitoring, reporting, and credit project development.
